Quality Assurance
At Gunnels Farms, our quality assurance program is complete and comprehensive. Our program consists of irrigation water, pest, disease and fertility management, along with harvest bruise monitoring and storage evaluation and monitoring. Strict sanitation is observed at all times. The following is a brief overview of some management techniques practiced by Gunnels Farms. Contact us for more details.

Irrigation Water Management
-
Monitoring of soil moisture and irrigation schedules.
-Installation and maintenance of tensiometer stations.
-Use of color and infrared aerial photographs taken through the growing season to observe and correct any potential center pivot uniformity problems.
-Complete pump tests including percent versus depth chart, flow rates, pressures, static and pumping water levels, pumping plant efficiencies, motor load and economics done every 4th year.

Pest and Disease Management
-Stand counts for calculation of percent stand and spacing.
-Weed scouting and identification.
-Experienced rouging crew.
-Monitoring of pest, beneficial insect and disease populations.
-Soil pathogen testing to determine presence and level of nematodes or fungal pathogens.
-A two-year rotation with Coors barley is used with seed for sale and a three-year rotation is used with plant-back stock.

Fertility Management
-Petiole fertility is monitored throughout the season.
-Irrigation water is sampled to determine contribution to crop fertility and suitability for irrigation use.
-Fertilizer applications are based on crop history, soil history, water history and aerial photos.

Bruise and Storage Evaluation and Monitoring
-Harvest machinery evaluation to adjust chain speeds, drops, machinery components and harvest conditions to minimize bruising.
-Hot box bruise sampling to detect location and percentage of any bruising that may occur.
-Storage evaluation measuring air flow, humidity, cooling capacity, insulation, pile volume and height.
-Monitoring of pile temperature and humidity to insure that proper holding temperatures and humidities are maintained throughout the storage season.
